Rare 1830's Printed Silk Dress w/ Pelerine/Collar
Around 1784, fashionable ladies, including Marie Antoinette, took to wearing block-printed ribbons decorated with triangles evoking the horns, fangs, and claws of the newly “discovered” harpy. Isabelle de Borchgrave has given full reign to her imagination in the pattern emulating a taffeta with elements inspired by Scottish tartans interspersed with floral motifs. This dress is now on display in the Dining Room.

Dress, circa 1880s: dark brown taffeta, cream silk damask, lace, and silk. Chester County (PA) Historical Society: “This dress is an example of over-the-top embellishment. It features silk chenille fringe, bows, lace, swags, ruffles and pleated scallops. There is even asymmetrical lacing up one side. What is even more astounding than the level of decoration is the size of the waist which measures merely 17.5" around.
