Chimay, Belgium Unfortunately, fans of this famous beer-making Trappist monastery aren’t allowed inside the brewery. Still, Chimay deserves a spot on the list for its status as a Belgian beer mecca. As an alternative, tourists can visit the abbey’s gardens, cemetery and church. Afterward, they can head to L’Auberge de Poteaupre, an old school turned restaurant-brasserie where Chimay beers and other Belgian brews are on tap.

Carnival de Binche, Belgium, 10-12 February Clown-like performers known as Gilles, wearing weird wax masks and wielding sticks used to ward off spirits, parade through the town of Binche. Be warned that, as part of the fun, the Gilles chuck oranges at spectators, but you're not allowed to throw them back, which doesn't seem fair.
