Fabergé egg box by workmaster Mikhail Evlampievich Perkhin, c. 1903. Rhodonite, gold, rose diamonds. Purchased by Grand Duchess Xenia of Russia (155 roubles); presumably a present to King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Fabergé was strongly influenced by the tradition of hardstone carving in Russia, which was centred on Ekaterinburg. Rhodonite, a form of striated pink marble, was one of the stones he used most frequently.
