In 1937, Mr. Charles Fitzpatrick was given a grant from the State of Washington to form a fire brigade to protect the timber and the grass lands on the Long Beach Peninsula. With that grant, the Ocean Park – Nahcotta Fire Department was created. The department was not supported by tax dollars, but by donations. The Ocean Park – Nahcotta Fire Department built their first fire truck from an old Chevrolet flat bed truck, a culvert pipe, and a small air-cooled pump.  Pacific County, Oregon

After its purchase of the railroad line, OR&N made several improvements most notably seen in Nahcotta, where they re-timbered the trestle and dock, repaired the turntable, and cleaned up the grounds and shops.

Jan. 27, 1915 fire ripped through the town of Nahcotta, destroying its business district. According to the Chinook Observer, “A fire staring from a defective flue in the old Bay View Hotel at 2pm…totally destroyed the town of Nahcotta. So fierce were the flames, driven by the strong dry east wind, that in less than two hours the entire business section was nothing but ashes and scrap iron.”
