Lillian Smith's Strange Fruit When it was first published in 1944, this novel with a curious title - taken from a Billie Holiday song about a lynching - sparked immediate controversy: It horrified some critics, prompted booksellers in Boston and Detroit to ban its sale, caused the U.S. postal service to seize copies, and tempted the public enough to make it the years's No. 1 fiction best-seller.

Strange Fruit inspired obscenity charges, court decisions, and police action, but outrage peaked over the fact that the 1944 bestseller was written by a white woman.

Yees, of course we start with the sophisticated and aesthetic version of it. A book that gets you the impulse of getting out of the chair, pack your bag and leave - and live! For this is the perfect frame to your life: No frame at all. Enter the great wide open.
