Rhamnus californica / Coffeeberry - planted 3 of these in our small San Francisco backyard and they are on their way to making a great green screen/hedge - more appropriate and less invasive than bamboo.

Pictures of easy, simple hedges, wind breaks, and screens. Here are pictures and descriptions of native plants that will work as a hedge in California. Native plants make a very drought tolerant hedge.

Lindera benzoin (Spicebush) | Early season blooms on a broadly rounded shrub. Flowers look similar to a Hamamelis (Witchhazel). Foliage and bark smell spicy when crushed or scraped. The leaves are food for Spicebush Swallowtail larvae. Plants need both male and female for fruit production. Male flowers are more showy than female, but females have brilliant red drupes when planted with a male | height & width: 8-12 ft | Full sun to part shade

Native Utah tree, but I worry it would end up becoming a trash tree. Anyone have experience with the salix exigua?
