Ball gown bodice c. 1800 made of black China silk. Trimmed with fine black cotton net ruching and silk covered wooden buttons. Lined with brown cotton. The back is very narrow and the front crosses over and is secured, presumably by sewing it back in the day. Here, I have pinned it closed. There is a separate decorative front which covers the lining | eBay

Yes, regency-era ladies did wear undergarments! This ensemble starts with a completely hand stitched, short-sleeved shift with low neckline controlled by a casing. Look closely to see cross-stitiched initials in the center front. One option for keeping one's figure under control were 'short stays', with a high waist and bust gussets. Overall is worn a soft linen dressing gown with scalloped ruffles and a double collar. Old-fashioned brocade mules are her footwear.

Directoire-period cotton gauze dress, c.1800. The sheer cotton mull fabric (muslin) of the dress bears little resemblance to modern muslin. Originally made only in India, "muslin" (c.1800) referred to a variety of cloths woven from very finely spun cotton yarns. The resulting cloth was transparent and gauze-like. The dress features a bib front bodice held in place with a pin on each side. The bodice and cuffs are embellished with handmade bobbin lace that has a drochel ground.
