Most homes start their life as a sketch on something or other. If you are an artist like Heidi Vilkman then you have a bit of an advantage over most of us. This is the outhouse Heidi wants to build in the summer of 2013 at the back of her earthbag, cob and straw bale cottage, with wood from the forest and the leftover straw bales from last summer's build. Esta es la diminuta Casa Pitufo de balas de paja de Poula. La construyó como un lugar temporal para vivir mientras estaba construyendo su casa en espiral de balas de paja inspirada en la forma de una concha que encontró en una playa en Malasia. The Tuscarora people lived in villages of longhouses , which were large wood buildings covered with sheets of elm bark. Tuscarora longhouses were up to a hundred feet long, and each one housed an entire clan (as many as 60 people.)

This is Rachel's cosy straw bale house in the middle of a Welsh winter. Her home was the first two storey load bearing straw bale house in the UK. Load bearing refers to the straw bales carrying the weight of the roof without any timber framework. The structure of the house comes from the interlaced bales pinned with hazel rods and plastered with lime. Follow the picture back to find out more on www.naturalhomes.org

before you take on building your project, start by sculpting yourself a model. You can use clay soil or purchase modelling clay...it doesn't matter. Your model will represent the thick walls of whatever system you are actually building with. Make sure your model represents some sort of scale...like 1/4" for each foot of the building. This is a passive solar cob house at Earthaven Ecovillage by Steveo Brodmerkel, www.kleiwerks.org
