The Stanley Hotel, Colorado, opened in 1909. In 1973 Stephen King stayed in room 217 and wrote the novel 'The Shining'. Guests at The Stanley have see people in hallways, heard the piano playing on it's own in the ballroom, and seen lights turned on and off. In 1911 a housekeeper was involved in an explosion and was shot down from what is now Room 217 to the floor of the MacGregor Room one story below. She was not killed, but now her ghost is said to still tidy up after guests'.
