Chatelaine Re-Nouveau: A collection ofvanity, personal care and daily use necessities, clipped to the waist, presented as a re-creation with original vintage to antique accessories. Here is a revisit of the Victorian Era go-to kit for women. This Chatelaine keeps handy 6 companions for daily, personal use.
"A chatelaine is a decorative belt hook or clasp worn at the waist with a series of chains suspended from it. Each chain is mounted with useful household appendages such as scissors, thimbles, watches, keys, vinaigrette, and household seals." Wikipedia
"Like a customized Swiss Army knife, a chatelaine provided its wearer with exactly the tools she needed closest at hand. For an avid seamstress, that might include a needle case, thimble, and tape measure, while for an active nurse it might mean a thermometer and safety pins. Inspired by the complex key rings carried by “la chatelaine,” the female head of a grand French estate, these beautiful, little contraptions were as fashionable as they were practical. In fact, their design was sometimes so trendy that style trumped usefulness." Collectors Weekly
I created this Chatelaine using a lovely gold tone Victorian era dress/belt clip base to which the chains are attached. I have outfitted this chatelaine with 6 components. When being used on a waistband, in the typical manner of Chatelaines, the clip on the back of the dress clip adheres well when clipped to the waistband.
I collected the attachments over time and primarily looked for antique items that might normally be found on a Chatelaine. I usually build these chatelaines in silver with sterling attachments whenever possible. This one is unusual as it happens to be in gold tones. Sometimes an accessory will be vintage as opposed to antique, but its' beauty is worth the compromise. When the accessory does not have a chatelaine style bail for hanging, I have attached one.
About the components on this Chatelaine:
1 - An ornate antique ladies watch to which I have attached a fan shaped bead made of bone. It DOES NOT work.
2 - A stunning Victorian celluloid fan, with 16 ribbon laced, pierced segments. The bail on it has been reinforced with a strip of black ribbon. This antique piece is a rare find. It is fragile.
3 - An antique brass mesh chatelaine coin purse. The mesh is beautifully fine, and moves like a weighted fabric. It actually feels 'soft' to the touch. The kiss lock closure opens and closes nicely and has two lovely blue stones on the tips of the closure ends (see pic 5).
4 -A beautifully engraved gold-tone comb case, complete with comb. I do not know if this is the original comb. It fits snugly in the sleeve without falling out.
5 - A simply gorgeous celluloid sheet notepad with 5 'pages' not including the cover sheets. The front cover is embellished with 3 sterling silver adornments. This notebook is in very good condition. Comes complete with a pencil. This is otherwise known as a dance card or carte de bal.
6 - A vintage piece, but it just works so well with this chatelaine, is a brass magnifying glass.
All these lovelies are attached to beautiful chains, which are attached to a lovely art nouveau ladies dress clip
Etsy limits us to 10 pictures. If you would like to see more detailed photos, please convo me and I will be happy to oblige. I have tried to be as forthcoming as possible about the condition of my components.
I work with antique and vintage parts. Some may show signs of wear or age. Please look at each picture closely. I have tried to show all aspects of my work. Please contact me before purchasing if you have any questions or would like more clarity in a picture. I like to think that older items have a character that newer parts have not yet earned.
Please message me any questions you may have.
