Kärdla is a main town on Hiiumaa Island that most likely  already existed in the 14th century, however, the oldest dated and preserved written artefact is from 1564. The name Kärdla comes from the Swedish language and means a swampy, wet valley, and was known better by names Kertil, Kärtellby, Kertel, etc. Before Kärdla became a city in 1938, it was quite famous as a factory settlement.
