More and more of my friends have expressed in recent years their disenchantment with the church. They struggle with a deep desire for authentic intimacy within a faith community. They long for simplicity. They literally feel as if life is not worth living without an experience of God’s presence within community. They are willing to sacrifice anything.

The reality is - I do have an agenda.  What pastor, minister, or religious figure of any faith doesn't? [I sense the ghost of Luther again.] I believe God has called women and men to be his agents in this world - to make visible His Kingdom. My agenda is first and foremost to love God and love others (what I and others have called "The Jesus Creed").  If my agenda stems from these two commands (which Jesus said were the most important) then everything I do and say must flow out of them. So…

It was a beautiful prayer for our health and our ministry, for David and Kristin, their work and families, full of gratitude. These were no mere words. This was a blessing, real and tangible, a prayer that will make a difference in our lives.

And I pray: God, help me to have the grace to see a world filled with opportunity, a people filled with potential, fields white for harvest. Help me to love my neighbor as myself. Help me also to recognize when my neighbor is trying to love me.
