Photography by Carsten Peter Headroom shrinks in the middle of Hang En as cavers pass beneath a ceiling scalloped by eons of floodwater rushing past. The river shortly reemerges onto the surface, then burrows into Hang Son Doong after a few miles.

Son Goong means ”mountain-river-cave,” formed two to five million years ago but for a long time it was undiscovered. It was first found in 1991 by a local farmer, but the first people who explored the cave was British experts in 2009. This enormous cave is situated in the Vietnamese national park Phon Nha-Ke Bang, 280 miles south from the country's capital city, Hanoi.
