Resist Inlay: A Simple Decorating Technique

The basic technique of resist inlay is to coat the surface of your piece with glaze or underglaze, cover with liquid wax resist, scratch your design through the wax and then brush a second color of glaze or underglaze over the incised design.

Applying black underglaze to textured terra cotta and then wiping it off leaves it in the indentations, providing a nice "antiqued" look that also highlights the texture.  These look great without an overglaze.

Nice site for these textures and underglazes.I like the look of the unglazed terra cotta after it has been stained, colored & antiqued a bit with some black underglaze rubbed into them.

Bone dry pot, apply resis to areas that will remain (raised) wipe non-protected areas with well rinsed sponge to remove clay and form the relief.
