Where Is the Julbock From?

Julbock - Yule Goat is an ancient character in Scandinavian Christmas folklore and Christmas celebration.

The Scandinavian Julboch (straw Yule goat) originated from Norse Mythology where Thor rode through the heavens in a chariot pulled by two goats. During the 19th century a Julbock would arrive with gifts for children at Yule festivities, symbolizing the gift giving of Saint Nicholas. Today, the Julbock has long been retired to the Yule tree and has been replaced by Father Christmas or the popular American Santa Claus. Photo by Nenyaki
