Russian carpenter and traveler Sergey Filenko from Karelia leads his boat along the waters of the Sukhona River. In 2002, Filenko left Lake Onega and sailed down the Vodla River, in the Republic of Karelia, retracing the ancient routes of medieval Rus traders, June 2015.

In the 19th c, literature collecting became extensive.Nearly half a million pages have been collected & archived by the Finnish Literature Society & collectors in Estonia & the Republic of Karelia.The publication Suomen Kansan Vanhat Runot (Ancient Poems of the Finns) published 33 vol containing 85,000 items of poetry in 40 years & 65,000 unpublished items. Collecting material relating to Karelia and the developing orientation towards eastern lands became known as Karelianism.
