Marian Schoettle etablished her professional name "mau" in Philadelphia in 1978. Mau's work is known as post industrial folk wear. She uses products that are normally industrial waste such as surplus hardwear and paint. Mau's most significant body of work is made from Tyvet, a water resistant material used to make packaging for mail. It is a light durable material, resistant to wind and rain and it looks beautiful as a fabric.
