Made in Crete  (Europe,Greece,Crete)  Date  200BC-50BC  Period/Culture  Hellenistic  Description  Marble funerary stele showing a woman with a girl attendant, and a distaff, spindle and wool basket; inscribed.  Inscription Translation: Parmon son of Onases and his daughter Kopias (erected this memorial) for his wife. Farewell.

Detail: Clotho, on the left, holds a distaff and spindle with which she spins the thread of life; Lachesis, in the center, holds a scale for weighing the thread of life and the cornucopia of Fortuna/Tyche; Atropos, on the right, holds an open scroll, probably symbolizing "the book of fate." Tige à culde- lampe, dotée d'une tête creuse flanquée de cinq anses pincées et agrémentée d'une bague festonnée. Provence ou Languedoc. XVIIIe siècle.  Éclat au bord de l'orifice. Long. 27,3 cm. Dans son ouvrage sur la verrerie, Mme Jacqueline Bellanger décrit ces objets comme étant des quenouilles de mariée à destinée purement symbolique. Le fait que leur tête soit évidée pour le passage…
