The best of the German night fighters was perhaps the Heinkel 219 (He 219). The "television antennas" on the nose of the plane are radar antennas. German radar technology was inferior to British throughout the war, mainly because the British had early in the war invented a new type of vacuum tube, the magnetron, which meant a quantum leap in radar technology (magnetrons are still used today in radars and midcrowave ovens).
