Tuvan shamans in South Siberia believe that the spirits of nature create their own sound world, and it is possible for humans to communicate with them through the sound of the drum. Tuva is one of the few places in the world where the shamanic heritage has remained unbroken. Tuvan shamans use the drum to convey to the spirits of a place their greetings, any requests, and thanks. A Teleut Shaman and her Drum, ca. 1930s. The oval drum is divided into the Upper and Lower World. A wavy line separates the worlds. In the Upper World are the Sun, Moon, planets and stars, also horses, riders, birds, and trees. In the Lower World are a man, a fish, and a turtle. These figures, taken together, tell the shaman's story.
