This unique sphere was carved from a single fossilized wooly mammoth tooth! It has lovely light beige colors, and the lightest parts of the sphere will fluoresce and even phosphoresce under long-wave UV light. Fossilized mammoth tooth is a very difficult material to carve properly. This piece was carved by a master lapidarist with decades of experience. The material went through several stages of stabilization during the carving process to ensure it remained solid and the finished product is outstanding! Fossil mammoth teeth from Yakutia, Russia, are significant paleontological finds that provide valuable insights into the life and environment of the Pleistocene epoch. Yakutia, located in Siberia, is known for its permafrost, which helps preserve the remains of mammoths and other prehistoric animals. The teeth of these mammoths are particularly well-preserved due to the cold conditions, allowing scientists to study their structure, wear patterns, and isotopic composition. These studies can reveal information about the mammoths' diet, migration patterns, and the climatic conditions they lived in. The discovery of such fossils in Yakutia contributes to our understanding of mammoth evolution and extinction, as well as broader ecological changes during the last Ice Age.
