*DURING THE CIVIL WAR ~ Union naval forces blockaded Florida's coast, but Confederate ships were still able to run the blockades

CSS Virginia.  Early on the morning of 11 May 1862, off Craney Island, fire and powder trails reached the magazine of the CSS Virginia, and she was destroyed.  Virginia's thirteen-star Stars and Bars battle ensign was saved from destruction and today resides in the collection of the Chicago Historical Society, minus three of its original stars.
