In October 1864, the largest Civil War battle west of the Mississippi took place just south of KC along Brush Creek. The nearby home Of John Wornall was used for both Union and Confederate forces as a hospital during the Battle of Westport. There were nearly 800 casualities on Wornall Rd. alone. Amputations were hurriedly done in the house; the severed limbs thrown out the window were piled up to the second story.
