: give each student a puzzle piece to decorate. keeping the edges intact so it can be re-assembled. Use for a lesson on individual worth. how each individual piece is beautiful on its own. But what a masterpiece you get when you put them all together!

Using stations on the first day of school sets the tone for the year. Show students that they will be out of their seats, engaged in learning, and collaborating with classmates in your classroom. These six stations, some group tasks and some independent tasks, are intended for completion within a 45-minute period. These stations can be used in any subject or grade level, and all of the station directions and activities can be edited to fit the needs of your classroom.

Checking for understanding: This is a great tool to use in the classroom. After a lesson or giving directions ask students to hold up the number that coordinates with their understanding. Based on the response you can either move on, help the few students who don't understand, or reteach it in a new way if the majority holds up a zero or one. -Maggie Leitheiser

"Fist to five" check students rate their understanding by holding up the appropriate number of fingers. The goal is for everyone to be in the green. Great way for students to self-assess their understanding and help you to gauge student understanding.

Routine: Reflection Beach Ball: At the end of each day, students will throw around a beach ball with various reflection prompts written on each side- including “what was the best part of your day?” or “what do you want to improve on tomorrow?” or “what did you learn today?” Doing this at the end of each day will establish routine for everyday reflection, which is a component of global competency- students recognizing their own and other perspectives.

Way to end every day- LOVE IT. May not want to keep a beach ball around. Instead do a pick-a-stick method (fun exit ticket)
