The Palila is an endangered Hawaiian bird which  is located primarily on the southwestern slope of Mauna Kea, the tallest mountain on the Big Island of Hawaii. It uses its strong, finch-like bill for opening mamane pods (a flowering plant in the pea and bean family endemic to Hawaii) to obtain the immature seeds as its primary food source, and the species shares a close ecological relationship with the plant.
