Theseus had two fathers, Poseidon and Aegeus, and he famously defeated the Minotaur. If Theseus survived his fight with the Creature he was to sail into Athens with white sails. Forgetting this, his ship kept their black sails. Aegeus saw the sails, and assuming his son was dead, jumped into the Aegean sea and drowned.
