Engage your students in research and have them learn about the contributions that different regions of the world have made to the fields of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). This project can be assigned during any time of the year. Directions: Break students up into groups of 4 or 5 depending on the number of regions you want covered and your class size. Assign each student a region (you can have students pick their own, but I find it works best to assign the regions at random). Each group is then going to research the different contributions to STEM that their region has made. Groups will have to come up with a creative way to showcase these facts (minimum of 5 contributions) through an artifact or poster that will be presented to the rest of the class. For example, if they are assigned Latin America, the students might opt to create a Mayan calendar as a way to showcase their research. The students could opt to make a video, commercial, or use any other technologies to create their presentation. This is a great activity to foster collaboration amongst classmates and to give the students an opportunity to present in front of the class. I usually assign it right before winter or spring break, since it’s a break from the routine and is fun. ***You can even tie the presentations with a taste of their region and have students bring sample food. A great way to add interest to the project and ideal for a Thanksgiving around the world theme. Included: - Teacher Directions - Student Directions with brainstorming web (print ready) - Sample Projects - Rubric This is a zip file containing the PDF version and original PowerPoint version that you can EDIT as you wish.
