Hedda Gabler is a very interesting character that has been analyzed for years, and she often acts cold, heartless, and downright evil. Hedda is an example of the "New Woman" who, like the women of the 19th and 20th century, had a brilliant mind which was wasted by her time period's oppression of women's rights. Hedda is stuck in her mind while being forced to live a meaningless life as a wife and mother, but she lacks the courage to try and change her position. She is driven mad, and lashes out.
