GreenSpace: Pure Pleasures
A posh resort and spa in the heart of California's Napa Valley wine country proves eco-aware vacation spots don't have to skimp on indulgences. *Designed by Napa Valley architect Howard Backen, Solage Calistoga integrates green features throughout the 22-acre property-from alternative energy sources such as solar panels on rooftops to chemical-and preservative-free bath products.
Boulders serve as stepping stones across a shallow 'beach' area of this pool, to access a fire pit area with built-in benches placed in the center of the pool. The silver pipe beyond is an old oilfield pipe with holes drilled in it to create a water feature - it also pumps water into the column of the Cabana, which cascades into the pool from halfway up.
Glass Waterfall (Muscat Freeman) Laminated plate glass sculpture. Water is supplied to five channels located at various heights in the sculpture. A dry stacked Owen Sound Limestone wall is intersected by the glass sculpture which offers a flow of water from five separate channels into a fish pond. This interior pieces if illumnated by fiber optic light.
In this garden at Greystone Cottage courtyard by Howard Design Studio an old stone trough has been converted into a self-contained water feature. It looks as though it's been underplanted with lavender which will shortly be billowing attractively around the outside of the trough.
