Simply including 'exploits' in the title of a children's book earns my undying admiration, but Tove Jansson somehow managed to combine Scandinavian homely charm with existential terror.

I agree with this description. Forget the spooky stop motion cartoon. It's all about the eight original books and Tove Jansson's pen and ink drawings. I would choose these as my luxury on desert island discs.
