I can't help but think of walking through the forest to get to the pond at the summer camp I attended for several years; the path through the forest also had planks over it, although that was more about uneven ground and mud than anything else.

There is a New Year's tradition in Finland in which you melt a horseshoe shaped piece of tin and then pour it in water where it solidifies. By examining the new shape and its shadow you are supposed to get hints of things to come in the new year.
