THE Close Reading Small Group Routine for 2nd Grade!
This is my tried-and-true teaching routine that I use in small groups to hit one skill or standard at a time! 1. Clearly define the skill. If it’s main idea, review what that means and how we find it. 2. Preview the text and make predictions. I’m a BIG believer that any comprehension lesson should start with a discussion of the title and a brief prediction. 3. Read in chunks and pause to model/encourage metacognition. Ask kids to reread sections for understanding. Revisit those predictions and see if you can confirm them. 4. Apply the skill through a graphic organizer and/or comprehension questions! 5. Repeat over and over with less guidance each time. Turn over a little more of the responsibility with each text, until the kids have reached mastery. ❤️
