"Rowing to my island, early in the spring, and finding everything just as I left it in the autumn, count as the most lyrical moments in my life. I close the door of the hut that I built myself, I light my paraffin lamp, I let the clock stop and listen to the sea around me." -Tove Jansson, quoted in "Islands of Fantasy,"published in 2003 by the Moominvalley Collection at the Tampere Art Museum (http://muumilaakso.tampere.fi/en/) Photo by Jaakko Kilpiainen.

"The skerry was shaped like an atoll - granite surrounding a shallow lagoon or tidal pool with a narrow passage out to the sea. At low water, the lagoon became a lake."
