Having black jewelry to wear for mourning was so important in the Victorian era that it inspired a lot of creativity about material use. Jet, which is a form of fossilized coal and is naturally black, was considered the best. But since it was rare and expensive, it was imitated in many other forms. The earrings on the left are pressed horn— a dyed composite made from animal horns. The upper right earrings are French jet, a black glass. And the earrings on the bottom right are true jet.
